NEW This month to WRITTEN CORRESPONDENCE |

Inquiry Call Slip - This is a great way to train your front end people as
well as to help track statistics. Have them printed on pads and keep them
by each phone. At the end of the day gather them up and put the results
into your statistic files. I would like to thank Steve Larson for sharing
this idea.

Hello,
This month we are unveiling the United Professionals STICK STRATEGY SYSTEM. This system is designed as a "bulky mail" format to replace the former 2,4,6 week calls. The letters have been professionally written with the goal of keeping students, building value in your program, increase pro-shop sales,
reduce buyers remorse, increase retention and produce referrals - thus the name STICK STRATEGY. You will have to make minor changes to the letters prior to starting the system. These changes are to replace my name, school
and address with yours as well as removing testimonials from my students with testimonials from your students. You should have these from the e-mails I recommended you send a few weeks ago.
There are two letter 1's. One is geared more towards kids so you have a
choice. This letter should be sent to all students after they have trained
for two weeks. This letter reminds them of all the wonderful benefits of
the martial arts as well as school policies. The second letter is designed
for you to send after four weeks and you should include a handful of poker
chips of plastic coins (this is the fun factor). The theme of this is "YOU
HIT THE JACKPOT" by joining our school. The coins in the envelope or
"bulky mail" are intended to encourage the student to open the package. This
letter is designed to again resell the benefits, and the coins can be used in
the pro-shop to help increase your sales. Letters three and four include
testimonials as well as an ethical bribe to gain referrals. You would do
well in preparing all four letters when a student first enrolls and then
just put them in the mailbox every four weeks. This is an easy system and
not time or labor intensive like doing 2,4, and 6 week calls. Once you read
them and visually see the clever graphics you will understand the power of
the system and how it will both increase your retention, improve your gross
and help with referrals. Please don't try to second guess or re-write the
program. A top client of Dan Kennedy's wrote these and it was a major
investment to have them done. With that in mind, I would suggest just
putting the system in place "as is".
This STICK SYSTEM I believe is the easiest and best system available for new
student follow-up. Just another reason that United Professionals continues
to be the leader in martial arts consulting.

I was walking through the store this weekend and notice all the Halloween decorations on display and it made me think about getting started on my Halloween marketing at the school. While in that same store, I actually saw Thanksgiving items out already and it made me think about ALL the Holidays we have coming up over the next three months; Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years……
Our Holiday schedule is very important around this time of year. We should be making sure our schedule doesn’t allow for too much downtime, as we all know, if our students are out of their routine for too long they just quit. Here is a great suggested holiday schedule:
Halloween - Oct 17th, inner-school tournament - “Spar Wars!” This tournament is sparring only, and the trophies are small, medium and large pumpkins. (more detailed packet to follow on this event, courtesy UP)
Oct 24th or 31st inner-school tournament party. This one is a “Costume Forms” tournament. The divisions in this tournament are broken down by costume; Monster Division, Space Division, Princess Division, etc… You pre-define the divisions.
Thanksgiving - this month is an important month and for a lot of schools and a big pro-shop revenue generating month. We will have a packet sent out with a very detailed plan for this holiday sales month. A general outline is Nov 21st and 22nd. All items and pre-ordered items, 30% off. Closed for Thanksgiving, Nov 27th. Super Friday Karate Camp 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM - $30 Half Day, $50 all day (for 20 kids, that’s $1000 a day)
Christmas - this is an important month to really watch your schedule. For most schools this is belt testing month and everyone wants to have a party before Christmas and host their belt ceremony before winter break at their school. This may not be the best of plans as there isn’t any need for the students to hurry back from Christmas break. A good plan would be to have a school party before Christmas and most schools take the week of Christmas off. Plan your tip testing for the week of Dec 29th - Jan 2nd. Then your belt graduation will be held/hosted Jan. 5th and/or 6th. This gives them a reason to return right after the Christmas break and you still have four weeks in January to work on the new curriculum for the next cycle.
New Years - I have a lot of clients that close for New Years Eve and New Years Day so they can go party, and I have some that make $3700 on that day by providing a New Years Eve Sleep Over Party.
This Holiday schedule is somewhat simple and allows for a great retention over the upcoming Holiday season. As with anything, if you have any questions or comments, give me a call. United Professionals 877-787-4542 Ext 713

ONE-ON-ONE UP Up Close and Personal
We decided to add another article to our UP consulting package we feel will give every one a different perspective on the life of a Martial Artist Instructor / Business owner. Most of us started our martial arts journey at an early age, some later in life, but we all went into it thinking dreaming of being the next Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis, or Jackie Chan. For most of us, being a school owner wasn’t even on our minds. It wasn’t one of the things we thought of. We didn’t lie in bed dreaming night after night of walking into our own martial arts studio and teaching children how to kick and punch. No, we laid in bed thinking and dreaming of being able to do the splits, kicking straight up into air, jumping and spinning 720 degrees, and throwing a world class kick, or winning our first world grand championship at the upcoming tournament. So needless to say we didn’t start off with the desire to be an instructor or even own a school of our own. This is something that grew in us as we grew ourselves. We started to see the benefits of what the martial arts can do for an individual, or maybe our instructor saw in us the potential to not only be a good martial artist but also a mentor. Some of us may not even remember when we wanted to start teaching or even why, but we did.
Some of us started our own school with the grand ideas of making big money doing what we love, or just making big money. However I have to say that the most successful schools I talk to everyday all have a few things in common. As you read our first interview with Adam Churchwell from Columbus, Ga., you will start to see a trend. As the next interviews start filtering through, you will see those three elements that make a school successful. Click Here to Read the Interview |

MARTIAL ARTS WEBSITES - NEW MMA DESIGN JUST ADDED!
Hi Renee,
I just wanted to take a minute and tell you how much I appreciate your web design. Since switching to your company 4 weeks ago I have enrolled 4 new members directly from the site. Displaying the various martial arts and a variety of people is an immediate draw for my school. Obviously you have captured what the people are looking for because my phone is ringing as a result of your efforts.
thanks again,
Rick Arnold

Grand Master Silva,
Two wonderful victories for our school and a lesson in your concept of "It's all about them."
Persistence pays. I have been working on getting into Gold's Gym to promote our program to out target market, fitness minded individuals. At first I couldn’t get in because they had a "part time" karate teacher. As things go, the part time teacher left and left them in a lurch. Through constant contact and education about our program, Gold's finally called and asked for help. My approach was to stress "What was in it for them." I explained that if they wanted to separate themselves from the other gyms in the area, they would need to bring added value to their clients. My suggestion was to allow us to teach our classes at a set time each week so parents that wanted to work out could do so while their children were receiving a value driven activity. The result is that we have a mass intro scheduled to promote the partnership. This involves two facilities. Gold's also gives us another big name to associate with and gives validity to our program.
The second victory is a partnership with a chain of 7 preschools. This preschool had already been involved with a competitor martial arts school. This group was looking for a full time program to be held during the day. What a gift! Off peak hours and a great feeder program for when the kids enter kindergarten. The director told me the reason she chose me was because I listened to what she wanted. The competitor came in talking about what they do. It is unfortunate for the competitor to lose business when it was so avoidable.
It’s the little things that make a good school great and a struggling school grow. As Zig Ziglar says “You can everything else in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”
Thanks for all you do and the many years of consistent leadership that have helped me along the way.

Hello,
Today I found out how your students must feel when they get a good job note. You gotta share it with everyone ---
I just wanted to let you know that since your visit (Aug 23) we have had 14 intros and signed 14 people. Six of them were from a mass intro, and 8 were private intros. Out of the 8 private intros, we were able to sell equipment packages to 5 of them. One person from the mass intro came back and bought an equipment package today. Tomorrow Missy is going to get on the phone to the other 5 from the mass intro and offer the package at the discounted price. Some of these memberships were 3 person families and we only count the 1st 2 on our stats. The total number of people that we have put on the floor on the past 11 business days is 16.
In addition to our enrollments, our floors have rocked. I have been out there at some point for every class. Our instructors are motivated to take our school from good to great. I even heard Tanner give an awesome lifeskills talk today ; ). I praise God for your motivation, and blessing our efforts.
Thank you sir,
Tom Whitaker
