Hello Mr. Silva,
Q - Thanks so much.. how is the school doing? is the economy slowing things at all for you?
A. -
Our retention has been fantastic as our school is a positive place with a great atmosphere for kids and parents. This is something that is needed and a concept we have to fulfill for all students. I was reviewing numbers and over all schools are only down only an average 3% from this time last year. Personally, at our school December was slow compared to last year however, with the birth of my grandson I have been away for two weeks and we have closed for the holiday break the 20th - 27th.
December historically has been the second slowest enrollment month of the year (July is the worst), however we have also seen records broken for retail sales. Doug Bertrand took in $40,000 between his two schools with his one day sale. In addition John Geyston has pre-enrolled 68 new students this month for his fitness kickboxing for 2009.
I have had schools throughout three recessions since 1973. The strong professional schools dedicated to super student service as well as building a sense of community will do fine.
UP has great plans for all our schools in 2009 as we are dedicated to helping you.

Hello,
Now is the time to gear-up for January. January is historically a good
month for new enrollments. The challenge is that there are many businesses
that are competing with you for those new students including, health clubs,
gymnastics, dance, and more. January marketing should start the day after
Christmas. I was with Diego Perez this past weekend in Miami and he is
already starting his "BEAT the rush" fitness marketing with door hangers, ad
cards and direct mailing.
This means that although the potential is great, it is up to you to get out
and market aggressively for those new students. Your marketing should
include, but not be limited to a VIP contest, new year ads, direct mailings,
mass intro classes, white belt buddy bash, buddy days, ad cards,
registration boxes, out going phone calls, window banner, birthday parties
and power appointments. Be sure to target those that will be setting New
Year's resolutions. This is a major reason health clubs attract so many new
people in January. So even though your martial arts is great for self-defense you are smarter promoting fitness and weight loss.
January, your goal is to increase your student base and receivables.
By increasing your receivables now, you are setting yourself up for
a strong UP/ASF check throughout the summer. Now this is the key to make
that happen. If you are enrolling students on a six month basic program
they will be set to expire in July. As you know, getting someone to renew
in July is extremely difficult. To make sure the business you write this
month is long lasting you must plan to upgrade these students in February on
your Black Belt Training course. In addition, you are going to need to target
all students whose programs are going to expire from February to September
in the month of February for upgrades and renewals. We will detail the
plan in the UP February Consulting Package you get on the 15th of January.
At the same time you should start right after the holidays targeting any
students you have that are paying monthly. These include students whose
contracts rolled over to month-to-month. If you fail to do this you are
setting yourself up for a drop in membership when spring sports begin. You
would be wise to contact these students and tell them your rates are going
up, however, they can keep their present rates if they commit again to a 12
month commitment. These steps are paramount to a successful spring and
summer.
We have some great plans for 2009. We understand that there are concerns
over expenses and the economy and will be contacting all schools individually
starting tomorrow to propose a plan to dramatically lower your collection
rates.
In January we unveil the UP MMA program. This affiliation will include
daily lesson plans, streaming video lessons as well as training camps. This
will be an added value for being a UP client. We are also planning an
apparel and equipment package to help you generate additional Pro-Shop
sales.
We are going to be offering free and discounted marketing products so you
can assure that you have a plan for enrolling new students.
In January we have a Level 2 Instructor College in Florida - February an
Instructor College and Program Director College in Washington State. I will
be sending the date for the 2009 Super Event attentively scheduled for late
March.
Being the New Year and everyone planning for a successful 2009 I thought you
would enjoy some notes my friend Bill Storm shared with me.
-
Keep the picture of prosperity in your mind even if you feel you are
going backward.
- Whatever happens, good or bad, must happen to prepare you for the good
you deserve.
- Keep your eye on the higher image rather than a lower concern.
- Act like the person you want to become.
- We tend to minimize the things we can do, the goals we can reach, and
yet, for some equally strange reason, we think others can do things we
cannot. This is not true-We all have deep reservoirs of talent and ability
within that can bring you all of the things you want.
- Image making eliminates competition from your life- by moving from the
competitive plane to the creative plane. The only competition you will
truly have is your own ignorance.
- Your mind can create any image you want from the various thoughts that
race through your mind- You are the writer, producer and director of the
movie in your mind.
- "Let me remind you, not to go searching for opportunity in the distance,
but reach out and embrace it right where you are."
- Let the image of a more prosperous you float to the center of your
consciousness. It is already here, let it appear.
- You must become mentally what you want on a physical plane.
Psychic Income vs Material Income
People ask me, "Does The Law of Attraction work?" Of course it works. But
thatīs asking the wrong question. The right question is: "Whatīs my unique
purpose, and how can I use the Law of Attraction to give value to the world?
When youīve defined your true-life direction and followed it, youīre living
the true secret.
One of the most brilliant minds that ever lived, Albert Einstein, said, "Not
everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be
counted." Iīd like you to count income in a different way from here on out.
There are two types: psychic and material income.
How many times have you been involved in a church activity, volunteering, or
if you have children - Little League or the PTA? Maybe you've donated your
time to worthy causes, and youīve received absolutely no monetary or
material income. Let me ask you, why did you invest any of your precious
time without financial reward? You know the answer; you did this because you
received something in return that told you that you were part of something
meaningful. You were contributing, giving at a higher level. Thatīs psychic
income, and itīs the most important income youīll ever receive.
Every single one of us has a deep need to contribute, to give something
back, to be part of something meaningful, and thatīs how you and I are going
to define our psychic income. Your psychic income is the most important
income you will ever, ever receive.
Money is nothing more than a neutral tool. Itīs like a knife; you can use it
to cut bread or turn it into a weapon. The tool is neither good nor bad. It
just is. And itīs only defined by the intention of the user. For this
reason, letīs talk about how we can actually create a monetary income that
allows our psychic income to flourish. Iīm going to suggest that you create
enough money in your life so that you donīt have to worry about it. When
money becomes a non-issue, youīre able to put your primary focus on the
other key areas of life - your relationships, your intellect, your health,
and your spiritual life. Sound good?

Enrollment Solutions for a Tough Economy
Let's put ourselves in our customer's shoes. They want to enroll their kids
in your program but money is tight. So what do you do? Think..............
How can you solve their problem? If you can solve their problem, you will
have a new student. How about this?
Our regular enrollment procedure calls for the customer to give you a down
payment and buy an equipment package. This can easily add up to more than
new parents expect, especially if you include the first payment.
So, here's an alternative.
Let's solve our customer's problem by offering them an all inclusive start-up
package for $299. This will include a limited equipment package of just
what the new student will need and the initial investment (down payment).
This way you are only asking them for money once. You can easily say, "We
require an initial payment of $299 which includes all the equipment your
child will need to successfully get involved in our program, his uniform,
boxing gloves, shin pads and rubber chucks. You will then satisfy the
balance of the program in 5 installments of $135. We understand that the
economy has made things tight for some so we have decided to include the
safety equipment package for free." Wow, what a good guy or gal you are
now! Your customer gets something for nothing.
The next part is up to you. The point here is to add value and improve
retention. Offer FREE Birthday Parties and other special FREE events to add
tons of community value to your program. You absolutely must make your
program the last thing someone wants to stop paying for during tough times.
Plus the party is free but they are responsible to bring their own supplies
so there is no cost to you. It's also great for your school as you have the
opportunity enroll new students from the kids' parties.
People are feeling bad these days and are worried, but they want their
children to be optimistic. They will come to you and cling to your program
if your school is one of the only places they go that makes them feel good!
As Zig says "You can have everything in life you want if you will just help
enough other people get what they want."
In your corner,

Win KIDS OVER! You will feel much different about misbehavior in your class if you remember
that the misbehavior is a way for the child to communicate one of his or her
four needs. We need to always look past the misbehavior and you will find a
child that has the basic need of feeling like they belong and that they are
important in someone's eyes. All children want to feel good about
themselves! It's just that children sometimes get confused or have learned
inappropriate ways to meet this need!
In addition to looking past the misbehavior to the real meaning and message
behind the behavior (and then meeting that need in positive ways rather than
punishing the misbehavior), there are four steps that you can use to win the
cooperation of any child that is misbehaving. Instead of looking to win over
children, look to Win Children Over!
1.) Show the child that you understand how they are really feeling! Express
to
them what you see them feeling (they may not even have a label for it!) and
check with them to see if you got it right. ("I'll bet you're feeling pretty
sad
that." "It looks like you're really angry about.. is that it?" )
2.) Show you understand by telling the child about a similar time that you
felt
really angry, or lonely, or sad, or jealous, or left-out or whatever.
("There
was this time where..." "That happened to me once..") By showing
understanding, you're not agreeing or condoning; you are showing that you
understand the child's world and perceptions.
3.) Share your own feelings and perceptions. By doing the first two steps,
you've created a connection and shown respect for the child, and now they'll
be willing to 'hear' you. ("Black belts focus, right? Smart kids focus,
right? Eyes like laser beams,
right? Do you think it would be hard for all the other students to focus if
they get distracted by someone playing in line? Of course. Is that fair if
someone is really trying hard to focus to earn their blackbelt..")
4.) Ask the child to work on a solution with you. Ask her if she has any
ideas on
what to do in the future to avoid the problem or if she can help you figure
out
a better way to avoid the problem. If she doesn't know, offer some
suggestions of your own and seek the child's agreement. ("Can you think of
anything you've learned from having Blackbelt spirit in the past that would
help you to...in the future?")
Make sure to apply these techniques with the right attitude in the right
atmosphere! First, separate the child from the other children by moving the
group to another area of the floor, or leading the child to another, more
private area of the floor. Have someone else take over the class, or
approach the child after class in private so that the entire class's
attention isn't on the child. Make sure you have an attitude of caring,
friendliness and respect. Take a "time out" for yourself if you need it! The
goal is not to embarrass, accuse, blame, criticize, or lecture.
Your goal is to Win the Child Over! |

The Goal of Continued Staff Training
All of us have trained rigorously in our respected martial arts to achieve and earn our Black Belts. At some point we made a decision to follow our passion and dreams to open a martial arts school to share with others our art and to make a living doing what we love. As instructors, we have had the pleasure of helping and watching a person transform as they have progressed through the ranks from white belt to black belt. For us to reach a high level of proficiency and to reproduce that in our students, has taken time, energy, patience, and discipline. We, as well as our staff, deserve the same attention to the skills necessary for us to perform the duties and responsibilities that go into operating and maintaining our businesses. It takes constant practice and effort to keep up the skills we have learned in martial arts. It takes that same dedication to our business to keep our schools growing and thriving.
The biggest investment we make is the one we make with our team. It's about placing time, energy, and yes, finances, into our most valuable commodity - the people working for us. At our two schools, we have 2 hours dedicated to our instructors training each week that they get paid for so that we can maintain the high standards expected of them to be able to perform their roles as professionals on the floor and in the office. We are committed to their continuous education and personal growth in this industry and guess what - It shows! The following measures are what we take to capture the results we desire from a group of individuals working towards the same vision.
1. Keep Training - To keep our passion alive, all of us continue practicing martial arts. Our team is physically training so that we can keep our skills sharp and to practice what we preach. Our instructors are not only encouraged to learn new arts and new skills to keep them on the cutting edge of this industry, but also to keep them challenged with new goals so that they continue developing.
2. Setting them up for Success - It is our goal from the beginning, when working with a new team member or existing team member that they are set up for success, not failure. Before a member of our team is required to perform a task, they are thoroughly trained for that specific task. This is extremely important, but after talking with many school owners, that doesn't always get done. Training staff doesn't mean handing them a script to read and expect them to perform the action. This is where the main investment happens. This is where we work with staff members by going over the scripts together, role playing the task with them, setting an example, watching and coaching them so that we are confident in their ability to move on without our help. Once we are confident in their ability, doesn't mean we completely let go. The next step is where the real growth and results start to happen.
3. Practice - Many coaches will share "Games are won on the practice field." Like I said, we have the two hours dedicated each week towards training just specifically for the instructors performance on the floor. One hour is completely focused on what is being taught on the floor so that the instructors are totally prepared and know what to expect. The details covered and role played during this time is specific curriculum being taught, warm-up for the week, drill for skill, mat chat, transitions from one class management segment to another, announcements being made, children scheduled for boosters, plus any other details that will help the instructors for that week.
4. Class Analysis - This is just like a coach after a big game that reviews the film of their team playing. Each day and class needs to be evaluated to check for proper execution. This is the time to be self critical and have a critical eye of challenges that need to be overcome and to highlight "the good plays" on the floor. This is where a decision has to be made by the coach - do you call for a time out to address the situation or do you play it out and discuss the situation later. Either way, you address positives and negative before the next class or in the next meeting you have.
5. Instructor Performance Review - The second meeting of the week we hold on Friday's is directly a reflection of what I or the head instructors have witnessed as challenges on the floor throughout the week and would like to fine tune for the following week and the future. It is important to revisit the areas that need improvement and spotlight moments of excellence on the floor to maintain a high level of performance by the team. Some issues are individual and some are as a group. It is important to address each accordingly and professionally so that everyone on the floor stays sharp. Role playing is a vital tool we utilize help accomplish our instructors understanding and performance application during this time.
The dedication we place into our teams continued training will not only enhance the professionalism of our businesses, but will also have a significant impact on the lives of our students, our employees, and our own personal lives.

Hello Everyone,
I hope everyone had a great holiday and everyone's healthy, happy, and had a great time with family and friends. There has been so many great and exciting things going on this past year with even greater and more exciting projects for the new year. We have all seen so many new announcements, offers, and help from the desk of Mr. Silva that our phone hasn't stopped ringing and our e-mail box stays full. One question I get deals with curriculum and systemization of curriculum. So Mr Silva asked us to put together a teaching plan and curriculum that could be used for just about any Martial Arts style - one that could be interchanged with a variety of systems. The curriculum must also have everything in it, Kicks, Forms, Self-Defense, Strikes, Counters, and the new craze of MMA.
We have put together in written form the Universal Curriculum. This system was designed by Mr. Silva for the rotating curriculum system. The format has taken three years worth of curriculum and divided it into three Phases. Phase I which is Basic, Phase II Intermediate Belts, and Phase III Advance Material. The material is also broken down into a three month testing cycle. By the month all the way to what is taught each week. Here you can see an example of what is going to be available in the first of the year. Along with the written material we are also putting this material on DVD with actual drills for teaching the material on each cycle. We are also going to make available an add-on MMA program via streaming video you can access monthly.

MARTIAL ARTS WEBSITES
Renee and the UP team have developed an outstanding website service! I think the very most important thing I could mention about them is their expertise. Results are the only things that prove expertise, and I have seen nothing but the best results from their work. My website pops up 5-6 times on the first page in Google over all of my competition in my geographic area. I don't even have to pay for this! The website is designed so well that not only does it get the best search engine results over my competition, but people respond to it due to the design and structure of the content. Every person that calls me from the website is so anxious to get started; they're pretty much ready to just cut me a check as soon as I get them in the door.
My advice to anyone considering a website through UP is to trust their expertise. Do everything they suggest, because they know what they are doing in this field better than anyone! Let the results speak for themselves.

Mr. Silva:
September and October where our best months yet. November was up 47% from last year and December is looking about the same. I attribute this to several things:
1) In July we moved 3 stores away from our old 2000 square foot school to our new 4500 square foot location. This allows us to have two nice size classrooms and have two classes simultaneously all the time.
2) The new location is very impressive looking compared to other schools in the area. Flat screen TV's in the waiting area with cafe type high top tables, complementary coffee and lots of room. Lockers and nice changing rooms and an awesome retail center with beverage and snack center.
3) Our new after school program has been a huge success.
4) We brought back our ladies fitness program and are offering kickboxing and pilates classes. The classes are crowded and I am expecting that to improve even more after the new year.
5) My staff has been improved with the addition on my son Christopher teaching many of the classes and my daughter Danielle running the fitness program.
We had our best sale day this December and we have been doing sale days for the past twelve years and most of our students pay in full. There is money out there, it just has to be found.
Thanks and congratulations on the birth of your first grandchild!
Have a great holiday season!
