Success Story

Mr. Storm,

I really appreciate how on top of this you guys have been. Mr. Mitchell has already helped me a lot and I'm actually starting to have days where I'm not in survival panic mode. The good news is that I've been signing a steady 2 to 3 a week with more on the way, so I'm beyond encouraged. You guys have been great. I feel like cornerman and Mr. M might be helping not just save my business but help me to be in a position that I've worked to be in for years even in this tough economy.

I'm starting to believe in my vision again, that it's possible and I wanted to say thank you all very much.

I still have some hard work and some long days ahead but I'm more prepared than ever.

Thanks,
Theron Sturgess

Message from the President
Hello

This is an important read. It concerns MMA, classes, workouts and trends. Please don't delete now just because you currently do no teach MMA. There is a trend going that all martial arts business owners need to understand so they can evaluate their position in the market place.

In the book OUTLIERS, Malcolm Gladwell talks about many millionaires and successful people and how they all had something in common. They had talent when opportunity arose and took advantage of changing times and market trends.

For example what do Bill Gates Of Microsoft, Paul Allen the third richest man from Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs from Google and Bill Joy one of the founders of Sun Microsystems all have in common along with the other three co-founders of Sun Microsystems have in common? All but two were born in 1955 the other two 1953 and 1956. The all had a huge interest in computers and had logged thousands of hours programming. They were just out of college with the right talent and skill when the computer industry broke open.

Now think of yourself. You have logged thousands of hours of martial arts training, you are in the martial arts business just when a new trend opens in the market which is Mixed Martial Arts. Again, if you are not trained in MMA do not stop reading. I have an idea.

Did you know that the UFC is planning to go head to head with the fitness industry and is opening a chain of fitness centers? This is what UFC president Dana White has to say.

UFC Gym officials said they are close to breaking ground on the first of five health clubs planned in California, and plan to build more such gyms across the country and in Canada.

"We´re going to force all these other gyms to take it up to another level," UFC President Dana White told The Associated Press on Monday. "Just like we have in the fight business, and everyone´s trying to compete with us now, same thing´s going to happen in the fitness industry."

White said most gyms and health clubs haven´t changed in years, giving the mixed martial arts league an opportunity to attract new fitness customers or others wanting to get different kinds of workouts under the same roof. The gyms aren´t intended for professional or wannabe fighters.

White said each gym would offer classes in several different disciplines of martial arts, as well as unconventional workouts for people looking to change their routines from typical treadmills and free weights. Each will contain an octagon, the eight-sided caged ring used in UFC fights.

The UFC is going to be your competitor. But worse is this.

"We didn´t want to just build one gym somewhere," Fertitta said. "This is going to become its own separate, profitable business and company on the side, and we´re talking about rolling out hundreds of gyms all over the place."

UFC Gym rates would be competitive with other chain fitness clubs and offer memberships and classes for men, women and children.

They are talking $20 a month. Okay, before you panic read on - there is a plan in here.

The plan will take a while and they plan on getting started in Southern and Northern California. However MMA is popular in your city right now. How do I know? Well according to Google Trends. The term MMA is Googled twice as much as the words Martial Arts or the word Karate. You also might want to know styles like Tae Kwon Do or Kenpo don't even make it close to the top portion of the list (as evidenced here). So it seems like the UFC knows something about what people want. Your prospects are looking for MMA. I knew this a while back and put up the web site www.mma4mesa.com just to draw people to my school.

Okay - now, am I saying abandon what you are doing? No. But you may want to rethink the current trend and seize the opportunity. I just got off the phone with Richard Lykes in Saugerties New York. Is it likely that the UFC with build a gym in his town of 5000 people? Probably not. Do I think that people in his town might be motivated by the UFC on TV and the fitness aspect of this type of training? Yes. Is there opportunity to expand his business even though he is not a UFC fighter? Of course, remember what Dana White said, they are targeting the regular guy not the fighter.

Making the Recession your success! Through an after-school program!

I was talking with R.S Mitchell about a month ago. He said that the Afterschool programs are going to grow during the recession. As always R.S was on the Money! January was my best month for sign ups for the After-school programs in a long time!

Why? Moms are going back to work and their kids need a place to be! And, we have the best place to be, hands down!!!!!

Question: Is an After-school Program for you? Answer: Only if you like no brainer money making opportunities that are a win for you and your customer! A karate student will pay you 100 to 190 dollars a month. An after-school student will pay you 300 to 500 a month without adding a huge cost to your pocketbook!

Important Tips:
  1. Start Now!
  2. Market to your current students.
  3. Send out a letter to your students explaining your idea. This will give you some idea as to who is interested!
  4. Be happy with only having 4 to 10 students your first year! Keep in mind, you should double every year. Think long-term!
  5. Hire someone who is good with kids and can keep them disciplined! Very Important!
  6. You don't need Vans and Buses to start. Often children can be bussed to you and you can use your own and your employees vehicles to start with.
  7. Teach Karate everyday to your students so you are not a daycare!
  8. To go along with #7, don't advertise that you are a daycare, but a smarter alternative to daycare!
  9. Be creative with your space. You do not need a separate room for them!
  10. Treat the After-school kids and Parents like VIPs in the school because they pay you way more!
Next month I will detail my daily operations. How I make my program work!

The Importance of School Systems

When growing your Martial Arts School, it's important to define, implement, and establish systems early on. A business system is a working combination of people and automated applications organized to meet a certain set of business objectives.

Every aspect of your school should have a system in place to gauge productivity, effectiveness, and growth. Let's think about this for a moment. If you where to divide your school in to different departments, like:
  • Phone call procedure
  • Intro Procedure
  • Sign up or sale procedure
  • Class Planning
  • Marketing
  • Retail
  • Just to mention a few. you will be able to maximize, project, and forecast the growth of your business.

Systems are put in to place to leverage resources: time, capital, and assets. With established systems, you are ensuring that every part of your business is being used to its' full potential and is available and on-call, when you need it.

If your Martial Arts school sees a shift in its' overall business model, with sales growing in size, then it's important that the support team also grows proportionately to handle the increased business. With a system in place that accounts for manpower, you should be able to make such adjustments with ease, without the worry of deadlines missed, revenue delayed, or a new client lost.

If you choose to be a one-man-show, the chances are rare that you will ever become a multi-millionaire. In the same token, if you learn how to systemize your school and plan for growth, then you are setting yourself to succeed. Documented systems ensure that your business will still continue to run smoothly and effectively if you're not there to look after it. Furthermore, it will greatly increase the value if you ever want to sell your business or franchise it. To use an age-old metaphor, think of the business as a wheel with every established system being a spoke. If one is broken or for whatever reason not functioning at full capacity, the wheel's structure will weaken. To avoid a total collapse, the problem spoke will need to be fixed immediately. The same can be said of your school. By establishing individual systems and having your school be the sum of all parts, you'll be able to identify such weak spots more quickly, address them and get back to the primary objective at hand: SUCCESS

    MARTIAL ARTS WEBSITES

    Mr. Silva,

About the web site, I just got mine up not even two weeks ago and someone filled out my opt in box. I called her right away. Anyway she signed up. These leads are too easy, they are already interested and pre framed because of what they read on the site. Thanks for connecting me with Renee she is the nicest person and very good at making me money. My web site is already paid for the entire year now, after one sign up. This person says she has friends that want to join and the whole nine yards. As your youngest client, who just turned 23 in November, the web site was a great present. I encourage all UP clients to just get one if they haven´t already. Renee also takes care of your Google and Yahoo search rank. My site looks great check it out: www.NewtownTKD.com

    Thanks,

    GREAT Success Story
    Hello Mr. Bertrand,

We have had a record month for December 2008. Last year was a challenging year with personal issues and staffing problems, but we hired two new part-time ladies to job share the front desk responsibilities and a full time Program Director at the beginning of December. Everyone came to the table with energy and enthusiasm, and that made all the difference in the world! December 2007 we grossed just over $29K. December 2008 we grossed just over $34K. That was a record month for us. The biggest factor in the month being so good for us was the rank camp we held from Dec 29 to Jan 3. We generated $5K on that camp alone. We held class for four hours over five days (excluding new years day). We tested students at the end of the week for new rank. The testing fee was included in the $250 camp fee. There were no discounts if the student did not test. There was even an excellent opportunity to teach life skills of perseverance, creative problem solving, indomitable (sp?) spirit and more. One of the kids in the camp broke his toe with only one day left in the camp and was told by his doctor he could not continue. He was issued crutches. We modified the form, worked out a sparring routine, self defense routine using the crutches, and allowed him to break his boards sitting down so that he could test. It was very moving for everyone in the room to see this seven year old not give up and get it done! What a great lesson!

My new program director has a very positive "can do" attitude and just went out "walking and talking" as we call it and was responsible bringing in three new families just by meeting them out in shopping centers and so forth. In addition we had 11 first & second intros scheduled for this week. Over the last year we have subscribed to Kono magazine and I had about 1000 issues of Kono still sitting around. He has taken them and put an advertisement on the back of the magazine and gone out and put them in any place where kids go and they will allow us to place them. They are in places like grocery stores, game stores, gas stations, etc. We have scheduled two birthday parties so far from the magazines. We are also giving Kono magazine away at the birthday parties to all the kids. We put some kind of an ad on the back with 8 ½ x 5 ½ labels and the same ad in the hands of the parents. We have scheduled one or two parties from those also.

Other stuff we have going from our December activities are a singles martial arts event on Jan 24th that could have anywhere from 15 to 60 participants. This event was arranged by my girlfriend who is making significant contributions to the business in many ways. We have a real estate self defense course tomorrow at Keller Williams realty. We are also teaming up with our Chamber of Commerce and another chamber member and creating the Chambers biggest loser contest. This is a 12 week weight loss program that will hold the weekly meetings at our facility beginning on January 21st. We have planned our next three months of activities that is attached for your review. We will be doing a glow chuck seminar, MMA seminar, New student orientation, and Parent's night out this month.

I am pretty excited about my new team and what we are getting done. I am also very excited about the Cornerman program, you, and UP being on our team and helping us along the way. Thank you guys so much for what you are doing. We are truly grateful for all the energy you guys put into making us successful.
