Marketing Tip
An easy way to make a cold call a warm call is to mail a letter to all neighbors of a new or existing student. I call this proximity marketing.
When the follow up call is made you can name drop and say “Your neighbor __________ starting training with us this week, etc.”
The neighbors’ names and addresses can be found online under the real property page of the county website in most cases or can be found using the Dickman’s criss cross directory.

Karate for Christmas – and why it doesn’t work
I have often been told from clients they were discouraged with the results of a KARATE FOR THE HOLIDAYS promotion. The truth is there is a major flaw advertising this. Parents may see the flyer or the ad but if their child hasn’t ASKED FOR MARTIAL ARTS LESSONS there is very little probability that a parent will purchase that. Parents tend to buy what kids put down on their list for Santa. I’m really not trying to be sarcastic, but I doubt if kids really write to Santa asking for more confidence or self-discipline. I remember one year when my daughter was about 11 and my son was 8. I bought my son a bike and was lost on what to get my daughter. So I decided to surprise her with a tennis racket and tennis lessons. To say that gift opening at the Silva’s that year was a little down doesn’t even come close to it. Although my son enjoyed it. A tennis racket and a piece of paper didn’t cut it compared to her brothers bike.
Solution – we need to get kids to ASK for Martial Arts For Christmas. You can do that by having some very fun events in December (early) and have all students invite friends. Have a fun class and then show the kids the MARTIAL ARTS FOR CHRISTMAS GIFT PACKAGE. Maybe demonstrate how to use some of the items. It might include MMA cloves, hand target, a glow in the dark nunchacku, rubber chucks, DVD of a kids martial arts movie (this way they can put on their t-shirt, grab their nunchacku’s and do the stuff to the DVD), poster for their room, super cool t-shirt or hoodie, PNO party pass, removable tattoo and 4 weeks of lessons. These are just some of my thoughts, your package can be developed along with the things you do. Hand out flyers to the guests – “Mom and Dad I want Martial Arts for Christmas.” On the flyer include the gift package and of course all the great life skills and well as the physical benefits.

PS – I know a lot of you don’t like the ad in the downloads for Christmas, “Don’t Worry” but the ad does work because it solves a dads' problem. Dad is busy and it’s Christmas eve - what do I do? When I had my school in Connecticut and Florida I was always open Christmas eve and sold lots of gift certificates and supplies to dads that didn’t pre-plan their shopping.

HOLIDAY TIPS
- Holiday Hours — recommended closing Dec. 24—27th and January 1st
- Plan your Dec. 31st Sleepover now. Also Dec 28th—30 is a great time to conduct a day camp.
- Present staff with Holiday bonus money by the 11th.
- Treat the staff to an upscale holiday dinner. Be sure to invite their spouses.
- Be diligent tracking attendance as students who miss extensive time can be difficult to get back in class come January.
- Begin January marketing immediately following Christmas. Many schools are doing the Combat Fitness program. We have some great videos to help you with this.
- Have an after holiday sale to reduce extra inventory that may be left over the first week of January.
- Be sure to hand out at least 5 VIP passes to each student in order for them to give them to friends as holiday gifts. See free downloads.
- Present a small token of appreciation to stores that display your registration boxes.
- Be sure to send your vendors, printers and associates a Holiday Card or small gift of appreciation.

Hello Mr. Silva,
I wanted to touch base with you, and let you know how things are going. September is usually our most productive month, and this one is no exception. So far, we have 17 new students enrolled, and the hits just keep on coming. Just this afternoon, as I was about to start teaching, two parents called, within 4 minutes of each other, to inquire as to whether they could bring in their 4 yr. olds for introductory classes today. Both of these parents had found out about us from our website today. We signed two new students today, from the website. In the past 3-4 weeks, 75-80% of our prospects first viewed our website, before calling us.
