Hello,
I was corresponding with a friend, Paul McCoy and he was telling me about how his school helped troops overseas last year during the holiday season. He was telling me about a solider that had just returned from Iraq that came into the Auburn School. He was not seeking glory, did not wish to leave his name. He came by for one reason only. To thank the school's students, for sending his unit food, games and material last Christmas.
Mr. McCoy's school and students made a difference! If any of you know of any soldiers, sailors, airmen or marines who are still in harms way, you could make a huge difference by getting your students together and show the real spirit of the holiday season. This is a great way to teach your students about contribution and giving back. I asked Mr. McCoy what agency he contacted and here is his response.
AGENCY, we don't need no stinking AGENCY.
We asked one of the ARMY officers in our Sturbridge school who was in IRAQ, via his wife, what the best thing to do was. He told us that sending things directly to A Person that we knew, preferable an officer, though that was not necessary, and asking that person to give it to the moral officer was the best way. He told us that then the people we knew, and the people who needed it the most, would get it. Otherwise, it just went out into space, perhaps semi directed, perhaps not, and they had to follow the requests of the agency who sent it. So we collected for a month, and divided up the stuff we got in to three 1.5 yard, 2 foot by 2 foot boxes, taped them up, and sent them to 2 soldiers and 1 officer in Iraq who we knew. We checked online and with the local Army Reserve (guard) for guidelines to make sure the stuff we were sending was OK with the culture, OK with both governments and OK with the soldiers.
Then we sent it.
We are the Agency. We, that being the teaching teams, wanted to make the most impact for those who we were helping. It turns out, however, that the people in the most need were NOT the soldiers. We found out it was their families. So by doing this we had to make sure they (the families) knew what we were doing to help THEIR family, not just the soldiers in IRAQ. In other words, we were helping them help their husband, wife, child, uncle -- the families took it that way, and we doubled the impact of the people we wanted to help.

DECEMBER MARKETING - Board of Director Diego Perez has a great idea he wants to share with everyone. During the holidays shoppers are looking for something a little extra special when shopping for gifts. Many times it's not only the gift but the nice packaging and presentation that will produce better sales. It is very important that you not only have shopping bags for people to put the purchases in but also some nice boxes for items. Below are some links to some great products that are very reasonably priced. Everything from a Chinese take out box you can use for t-shirts to special boxes and envelopes for training DVD's and gift certificates.
I'd suggest a very nice display in your pro shop with items in the packaging. As an added bonus it's great to offer gift wrapping. I used to get a table and Leadership Volunteers for gift wrapping. You can charge a few dollars and use the proceeds for a party for your leadership that volunteered their help. Be sure to have a selection of Christmas as well as Chanukah paper.
Click here: Packaging Supplies and Retail Packaging Ideas by Bayley's Boxes - Nice boxes if you sell training DVD's. The also have some very nice gift certificate envelopes.
Click here: Retail Boxes - Uline - The 2 Quart Chinese Take Out box makes a unique package for school t-shirts. They fit if you fold and tightly roll them
Click here: Paper Mart Packaging Store - Gift Boxes - This company offers so nice apparel boxes for uniforms, shirts jackets etc.

Mr. Silva,
A few weeks ago I took my staff to Doug Bertrands school. Doug was kind enough to let us attend his Monday Staff meeting. They did the most unique thing, they actually roll played what they were going to teach in class.
Anyway, the most valuable thing I aquired from my trip was not from Doug but rather from his wife, Mrs. Bertrand. That was great information on how to better my holiday sale (or Santas workshop as we call it). Zanette told me that one of their biggest sellers at their holiday sale is UPGRADES. This got me thinking. I have a HP inkjet printer that prints paper 13" X 19" and put it to work making posters (throughout the night) for my school with the following offers: Summer camp $189 a week - Masters upgrades $18 a month - Private lessons 3 for $99 with me and 4 for $99 with other instructors. I marked down my curriculum videos and played them on 2 huge plasma tv's also built a poster discounting our New-Years sleepover.
Here is a brief overview of my stats from a 6 hour one day sale:
| Gross Business |
$20,867.16 |
Cost including all merchandise, wages, income and sales tax |
$3246.25 |
| Summer camp |
$3213.00 |
| Video sales (It costs me $10 per video to manufacture) |
$756 |
| Upgrade Contract amount |
$15,228.00 |
Special 1 time a year hooded sweat shirts (100% mark-up) |
$1616 |
| Misc stuff |
$5416 |
|
|
My point is how powerful 1 idea can be (if you put it to work).
I would have never thought to sell "services" at a holiday sale!
From myself, My wife and staff, THANKS TO UP AND THE BERTRANDS!

Hey Mr. Silva – Do I have the best wife or what? Amanda followed the directions she gave everyone in your monthly newsletter and she sold $20,079 in merchandise at our Holiday Sale on Saturday! That was to an active count of about 250 students, and it was all merchandise – no private training, no down payments, no belt fees or anything like that. - Damon Tong |

On November 10th, 68 competitors participated in the 2007 Kids Saving Kids tournament sponsored by Zakira Martial Arts.
During the event four outstanding community leaders were honored. The Pacific NW Martial Arts Hall of Fame inducted Masters Rick Johnson, Rick Cropper, Steve Larson and Doug Bertrand into their ranks. These four individuals have given so much to their communities through their martial arts teachings that they deserve ongoing recognition from all of us. |

Chris Gates had a lot to celebrate this month with close to a $40,000 UP/ASF collections for November. This is a record to Mr. Gates school located in Greenlawn, on Long Island New York. Mr. Gates has an awesome team and has been a dedicated member of United Professionals for 16 years. Congratulations, it is great to see the continued growth and success you have worked so hard for. |

Thanks for the prize wheel idea. we did a trick or treat street booth last saturday and got 15 appointments with 260 NAPs. We had another simular booth yesterday and we have 256 NAPs. I looked in the appointment book today and we have 18 intros scheduled for today and a mini course with 13 kids in it. Looks like we are gonna need a bigger boat! (from jaws) to hold all these students.
I will keep you informed on how many we enroll. Thanks again

Thank you very much for everything that you and Barry Van Over do for us as a part of the UP system. UP is without a doubt the reason our school is as successful as it is. We may have eventually gotten to the point we are now, but I am convinced that UP’s systems is THE major key to our success. Last month we grossed over $42K. That was our best month to date, in a non tournament, month. I firmly believe that believing we could do it, expecting to do it, and having faith that it would happen is why it happened.
Thanks again,
