NEW Valentines Day Ad Cards

Hello,

In the New Year everyone is always looking to improve programs so I asked the man who has traveled the world, does over 50 seminars a year and is now the President of Kono Magazine, Roland Osborne, his thoughts on curriculum.

Please note - Everyone has the pulse and the intentions of what they want their school brand to be. Here are a few ideas of what many successful schools are doing to Upgrade their curriculum. If you get 1-2 new ideas it's worth the 3 minute read!

Warm-Ups
3-5 year olds - Little Dragons/Ninjas/Tigers
Obstacle courses for coordination and physical skill building, light drills, and fun exercise challenges, X-RAY PAPER, and jumping over obstacles. Fun Team Challenges and 1 word commands for positive discipline. Invite the parents to help in class often, they enjoy spending this time with their children.

JR's, Teens and Adults
Vary warm-ups with martial arts techniques, plyometrics for dynamic performances, exercises, more advanced obstacle courses and a challenge to peak out the warm up. Pace and peak 10- 20 second rounds, 3-reps and a short rest in between works great!

For instance: Today we are going to start with this excellent speed drill that will make you extremely fast in everything you do. Then we are going to work on the machine kick to give you and untouchable front leg Round House kick and at the end we are going to have the machine kick challenge!

Self-Defense - For JR's to Adults
Many schools are mixing easy MMA Drills with Traditional Self Defense Techniques.

For instance- 2 self-defense techniques (month 1) and 2 MMA techniques (month 2) or Cycle 1 - Traditional 4 techniques, Cycle 2 - Ju Jitsu 4 techniques, Cycle 3 - Kick Boxing 4 - Techniques, etc. Ride the wave. Everyone is seeing the benefits of MMA for self-protection and UFC is doing a great job of advertising the physical shape of theses athletes and their protective proficiency. Both styles of self-defense are very impressive, both serve a great purpose and both are beneficial to the art!

Check out this new movie launching in March - New Age Karate Kid meets, OC, MMA and Fast and Furious

Never Back Down - http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=24813902

Forms/Weapons
Many school owners are seeing the benefits of traditional and open forms. Traditional forms bring tradition and art with power, focus, concentration and discipline to hold stances. Open forms bring excitement, dynamic speed and explosive kicks mixed with fun music, more kia's, modern trick kicks and techniques. Think classical music meets MTV. Both are very impressive, both serve a great purpose and both are beneficial to the art! Survey says- Most kids prefer Open Forms to Traditional Forms! Adults are about even but they will take the open forms with NO jump kicks please!

Music
Survey says- My instructor plays the same old music over and over! Does he even have any new cd's?

Go to the children's section at Barnes and Nobles, Blockbuster, or any music store.
3-5: Kids Bop, Disney Tunes, Jock Jams
6-12: Kids Bop, Now, Jock Jams, Top 40, Techno
13-17: Rock, Techno, Top 40, Easy Rock- Teens like to bring there own music. Let them know to bring you in a few songs they like as long as there is no foul language. It makes them feel a part of the team and you will be quickly educated on teen music.
18 and Up: Rock, Classic Rock. Please don't play that music that sounds like 1 song playing over and over for 1 hour (techno)!

BBC/Masters and Black Belts
Kids two favorite things are Kicks and Weapons. A good variety of style, weapon, open forms keeps retention high. Rotate every cycle - plus it is good for store sales.

For instance-
Judo, Nunchucks, Jump Kicks, Aikido, Bo Staff, Open Form, Ju Jitsu, Wushu Sword, Jump Kick Gymnastics

Leadership
Attention Future Instructors - bench strength is very important for a well running school! The most successful schools have a great class plan that incorporates these 4 parts-

Personal Development
Teaching skills
Practicing
Promotions/Testing

For instance-
Warm-up, review teaching technique for the day, practice, review personal development. Make sure there is a progress reward system from special color collars, belts, stars to patches.

2008 Instructor College

Greg Silva's School in Mesa, Arizona
April 10th - 12th, 2008

Click to Check out our Website! As you already know we had to cancel the instructor college in Washington. After I sent out the cancellation several people said they we intending to go. If you are attending to go to one of our events it is important to call Jeannie and pre-register. At the time I cancelled we only had two schools. It doesn't make economic sense for UP to send five instructors and incur the expense of airline tickets and payroll.

To make up for this we are scheduling a NEW COLLEGE for Arizona April 10 - 12th at my school in Mesa.

This college will be dedicated to performance on the floor, instilling protocol, one word commands, formations, the teaching platform and floor management.

We will do in-depth studies on teaching benefits, designing drills for skills, qualities of a champion, mechanics of basics to bring out the best in students, time management, training your junior instructors, conducting events and class management.

A recommended hotel only 5 minutes from the school is La Quinta Inn & Suites Phoenix Mesa East. 6530 E Superstition Springs Blvd. Mesa, AZ 85206 Phone (480) 654-1970.

We have discounted the event due to the Washington event being cancelled.

We will also host the Instructor, Program Director and Certification SUPER EVENT the end of June or early July. We are currently waiting to sign a contract with an event center.

The investment in the empowering event is only $249 per person or bring you entire staff for $999. We have room for 50 participant - PLEASE register early by calling Jeannie at 877-787-4542 ext 714

FEBRUARY MARKETING - February is the month you should start planning your summer camps. Many schools conduct camps during summer to take advantage of kids and parents that need a place to go as well and the incredible income that can be generated each week with a well run Summer Camp Program.

There are three basic types of camps that schools do. The first is totally martial arts based and you are looking towards your student base to draw your membership. The second type of camp is fun and activity based and you are looking for any child in the community to attend. The third is a combination camp. The mornings can be martial arts based and the afternoon activity based. This is very popular because now you can offer a morning martial arts camp, you can offer an afternoon activity camp or kids can enroll for the entire day and enjoy both.

Most schools run the camps from 10 am until 3:30. This is the time for main activities, classes, going to the town aquatic center for swimming, PUTT PUTT golf, watching movies, playing sports, doing martial arts, weapons classes etc. Of course you will have times for snacks and lunches. It is important that kids bring a lunch. Unless you have the proper license you don't want to get shut down by the department of health.

Many parents need this service because both parents work and they want to make sure the kids are active and safe. This means you will also have to have someone there early at the school for early drop off.

You will notice many different camps being advertised in your area in February as parents look early to make arrangements. If you are doing a camp just for your students this is the month to create a flyer and hand it out. If you want to open your camp to the entire community then this month's New Summer Camp Mailer is perfect. You can also use side one as an ad in your local paper. The cost of attending camps will depend on if it is full of half day. Full day camps should be priced in the $95 - $130 a week. 40 students at $120 a week is $4800 a week in extra income. School teachers off for the summer make great camp counselors.

During the next few weeks watch your e-mails for more camp details.

SUCCESS STORIES - This is a must read! Learn how others have succeeded with creative marketing and planning!

Good morning sirs,

I wanted to let you know our stats for the event we did Saturday. As Mr. Silva knows we had a Mass Intro scheduled for last Saturday at 12 noon. It started snowing heavily at 10:45 am Sat and since this is Georgia and most people aren't used to the snow we were very worried about the turn out. We had 11 students show for the event and not only did we enroll all but two but we ended up signing up some families (even though the other siblings were not there) and we finished the day with a total of 15 enrollments. That is a record for us in a one hour Mass Intro. We also had several people call and said that they wanted to come but they didn't want to get out in the weather so we scheduled a private lesson for this week. We ended last week with 9 appointments in the book for this week and Monday hasn't even started yet. Our total enrollments last week.....21!!!!!

Sincerely,

Good Morning Mr. Silva,

As you know, our new Spalding's World Class Karate of Gilbert has been in business now for 10 weeks with some very good success.  Due to delays in advertising, the first 2 to 3 weeks were quite slow, but once people realized we were in the area, things began to pick up quickly.  Even through the holidays we had students eager to sign up for our programs.  We currently have over 32 students enrolled: 23 kids and 9 adults.  Two lessons learned for myself; 1) advertise early and be aggressive with your advertising, and 2) kids aren't the only people interested in martial arts training and fitness as witnessed by the fact that over 25% OF OUR CLIENTS ARE ADULTS.  Thanks for all of the helpful emails and useful information I find on your website.

Mr. Silva,

I thought I would update you on my success last week.  Thanks to you, Kelly Fiori and Doug Bertrand I have recieved some excellent education on how to run event booths. I have tons more to learn but here is how I did.

This Last Saturday I rented a booth at the Kid Safe Fair in Salt Lake City and preregistered 43 individuals each for a private intro this week. I booked every single available time I had.  I collected 50 additional names and phone numbers, collected a paid in full for 12 months and signed up 2 additional students on 12 month programs. All of this happened this last Sauturday.  I can't thank you guys enough for the selfless time and effort you provide 24/7.  I can never wrap my brain around how amazing and selfless all of you in United Professionals are.  Thank you again for all you continue to do.

It's an honor to be apart of such an amazing team.
